RAWkin’ Segment with Tracy Sabol

What a fun morning we had in the kitchen last week with WMTW’s Tracy Sabol. We  chatted all about the rawsome bennies of the raw food lifestyle as well as made two smoothies: Basil Mango Boost and Strawberry Shortcake. Getting Your Kids Back on a Healthy Track

I know, I know…it’s hard when the visions of sugarplums and candy canes turn into the hard reality of sugar addicted kids.

Time to toss the holiday sweets!

The holidays are over, Mom! You can no longer use the excuse of parties and shopping to explain away the gum drops and Happy Meals. You know better than anyone that if you don’t prioritize healthy food you are going to be stuck with some sick, cranky, chubby kiddos come March.

“But it is just so easy to throw stuff in the microwave or hit the drive-thru!”

Zip that Lazy Bone up! I know it seems like that is easier and seemingly cheaper to feed them processed food, but in the long run you are doing your family a huge disservice. Not only will they gain weight, but their risk for Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and allergies increases greatly. Their immune systems also suffer and they will be sick much more often. I am sure their pediatrician is cute, but come on, hanging around a germy office when you could be skiing isn’t worth it.

The bottom line is that kids will eat what YOU feed them. Sure they are going to cause a scene when you take away the coco puffs, but when they are hungry they will eat (and love) the nourishing foods you serve them.

Here are a few tips to ease into your new Healthy Day:

1) Start the day GREEN. Green Smoothies are the best way to get a truck-load of vitamins and nutrients into your kids’ system. They will be filled up with the sun’s energy and will be rawkin’ until lunchtime. Older kids love peeling, chopping and blending gorgeous fruits and veggies, so let them make their own creations.

This Rawk Star starts each day with Green Power!

IN a high-speed blender add:

1.5 cups filtered water

2 ripe, peeled bananas

handful frozen or fresh berries

the meat of one ripe mango (or cup frozen cubes)

big handful baby spinach

Agave nectar is optional for extra sweeteness

cup ice

Blend until smooth

2) Be a role model! You can’t preach to your kids to eat fruits and veggies if you are chowing down on Chinese take-out. Eat what you are telling them to eat. That influence goes a long way! Eat as a family. That is so valuable in many ways.

Eating all together is a magical way to end the day.

3) Take your kids shopping with you. Children are naturally attracted to the vibrant colors of fresh fruits and veggies. Let them pick our what they gravitate towards and they will be much more likely to eat it.

4) Get some help. There are so many amazing raw and Vegan cookbooks out there. You can find pretty much anything in a vegan (or healthier) version. Pizza, cake, chicken nuggets–you can still feed them their favorites but just in much better versions. Follow Vegan blogs, visit your local bookstore and library and buy veg magazines for some incredible treats.

5) Start slowly. If all you do for now is add one Green Smoothie a day, that is great! In Feb, start adding one all-vegan meal once or twice a week and grow from there. The family will be much more appreciative and receptive if they can still cling to some familiar foods. But before long they will be craving the POWER OF PLANTS!

Wicked Smaht Monday: Smoothies Gone Raw

We did it!! After many fun months in the kitchen creating smoothies we know your family will love, we published Smoothies Gone Raw last week. And nothing is smahter than adding a smoothie to your day, everyday!

Elizabeth and Maggie came up with 131 recipes that are divided into three rawlicious sections: All-Fruit, which is great place to start if you or the kiddos are new to smoothies; Green Smoothies, where we expand the nutritional value by adding rawkin’ greens like kale, spinach and watercress; and Dessert, all guilt-free and delicious!

Smoothie Lickin' Good!

Here is our Berry Muddy Smoothie that you can make today! Kids love it and can’t even taste the spinach.

In a high-speed blender, place two peeled, ripe bananas; two cups of your favorite berry mixture (in these pics, we used raspberries, blackberries and blueberries); two handfuls of baby spinach, 1 cup filtered water and 1 cup ice. You can add sweetener like agave if you wish, but it really isn’t necessary! Blend until smooth and drink up! (Or store some extra in a mason jar for later.)

Get Figgy With It for Foodie Friday

Figs are kind of mysterious … dark and purple on the outside and a gorgeous pink on the inside.  Kids might be a little apprehensive to try them if they aren’t familiar with them, but trust me when I say that they will oooo & aaaa over them once you cut into them.  I decided to make a fig smoothie “Get Figgy With It” to introduce the fruit to my niece and nephew … it was a hit!  YUMMMMMM!

Get Figgy With It – 2 servings

5 figs

1 banana

1 orange

2 Tbs sesame seeds

1/2 cup ice

1.5 cups water

pinch of sea salt

Blend ingredients until smooth & creamy & eat up!  Sooooo sweet & delicious!  ENJOY!

Watermelon Wednesday: Get Your ROOST On!

Time to ROOST!

Finally, the wait is over! The opening of ROOST happened today. We are so happy there is a new juice and raw food cafe in Portland!

Owners Kathleen Flanagan and Jeanette Richelson took extra care in creating a menu that is as original and inspired as it is healthy and delish. It was hard to choose from the lovely menu–I was toggling between the Arugulta, Green Lemonade and Red Russian…How can I choose??

Pouring up the LOVE

It was easy for my four-year old to choose; He was quickly obsessed with the idea of a Banana Split Smoothie complete with cashew whipped cream and a cherry! (He asked for ten!) I finally choose and happily sipped a chilly Mojadito Pepino, which tastes exactly like a Mojito, the essential summer cocktail. I added in some fresh ginger Kombucha for an extra burst of nutrients.

While Roost has yet to start serving the food, (the imagine by the end of the week they will be ready) the drinks were plenty filling. They will also be open late with organic wine and Prosecco choices.

Looking ahead to the food, Van loves that his favorite snack, Ants on a Log made the menu and I am most excited to try the Nori Roll, which is made with almond-sun seed spread, seasonal organic marinated veggies with a side of Almond Buttah kale chips, made by your very own KIDS GONE RAW!

It’s All About the Strawberries & Peaches

Strawberries are a juicy source of vitamin C!

Foodie Friday with Elizabeth: 

I don’t know about you, but I cannot resist the juicy strawberries and peaches that are available right now.  WOW!  There is nothing sweeter than fresh picked fruit … not only is fresh, ripe fruit nature’s fast food, it’s also nature’s candy.  And guess who has a sweet tooth?  Not me!  :-)

We’ve got 2 simple recipes for you today that include strawberries and peaches, 2 of my favorite summer treats … ENJOY!

Peachy for Strawberries Smoothie (makes approx 1.5 quarts)

3 cups of mixed greens (I used chard & dandelion greens from my garden)

2 ripe peaches

1.5-2 cups strawberries (stems & all)

1 banana

1.5 cups of water

1/4 cup ice cubes

4-5 drops of liquid stevia (I did this to balance out the bitter dandelion greens)

Place ingredients in the blender & blend until smooth & creamy.  Drink up!

 

Strawberry Peach Salsa

1 cup of sliced strawberries

1 peach, diced (I used a white peach)

2 tablespoons yellow onion, chopped

2-3 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped (I used a mix of purple and green basil)

1 tsp hemp oil

1 tsp coconut aminos or nama shoyu

1 tsp coconut nectar or raw agave

1 tsp of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice

Place all ingredients in a bowl and toss.  Let mixture sit for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to settle.  Serve as a dip with crawkers, on a bed of lettuce, or eat as is.

Rawsome Tip Tuesday with Maggie

Are you new to Green Smoothies? Is you reaction to wither in fear or run away?
I get it! Most people don’t EAT kale let alone DRINK it! It can seem bizarre. But consider this: How is drinking living, nutrient rich plants each morning weirder than filling up on cups of caffeine and cream, slabs of greasy pork and pancakes loaded with chocolate chips and fake syrup?

Even thinking about it makes my heart clog!

Your body really wants Option A. Nay, it NEEDS it!

Our bodies are like the flowers you planted last weekend. They crave the sun. Since, bowls of sunshine are hard to come by and even harder to cool, the next best thing is to consume lots of leafy green vegetables, which are loaded with chlorophyll. Does that bring you back to Sophomore Science class?

In case you skipped that day: Chlorophyll, which also gives plants that stunning dark green hue, is responsible for absorbing all of that delicious sunlight, which turns CO2 into oxygen. During this process, the energy that causes the plants to grow and develop is produced.

Eating Leafy Greens is Like Eating the Sun's Energy

So, when you gobble up these plants, you are ingesting that energy! That makes your heart, skin, brain, cells, bones, organs, eyes…everything!…so happy, vibrant and healthy!

A simple way to ensure you are getting healthy amounts of greens is to include them in your smoothies. The blender masticates (pre-digests) the leaves by turning them into liquid form, hence making it that much easier for your body to access the living vitamins and minerals stored within.

Kale, spinach, parsley, romaine, wheatgrass, sprouts, Swiss chard, cilantro–these are all loaded with the living love your body needs to thrive.

My tip for the day?

EAT MORE GREEN! In smoothies, salads or just nibbling from the garden like a bunny. Just get it in!

5-2-1-0 de Mayo … a Let’s Go Event!

Kids Gone Raw was serving up some rawsome green smoothies on Saturday for everyone at the Lewiston Middle School for the 5-2-1-0 de Mayo Event sponsored by Let’s Go! Androscoggin. Health, nutrition & fitness were the focus of this 4 hour celebration & it was a blast … from veggie snack packs & smoothies, to karate, zumba & hip hop … this was the place to be.

We poured over 225 little glasses of green smoothies for folks & the consensus was that they were absolutely to LIVE for!

Here are the recipes for the different smoothies we blended up:

Berry Muddy Smoothie: serves 4 kids 3-4 handfuls of spinach, 2 bananas, 2 cups of berries, 1.5-2 cups of water. Blend & drink up!

Mangolicioius Smoothie: serves 4 kids 3-4 handfuls of spinach, 1-2 bananas, 1 mango (peeled with pit removed), 1 orange (peeled), 1.5-2 cups of water. Blend & drink up!

The Hanna Berry Mango Smoothie: serves 4 kids 3-4 handfuls of spinach, 1-2 bananas, 1 mango (peeled with pit removed), 1 cup of berries, 1.5-2 cups of water. Blend & drink up!
